Alan,
Most of those "big round flanges" screw on to the ballnut body! Are
you sure it doesn't?
Yes, it is common practice to machine the screw/nut combination
(usually re-working the ends of the l/s, tho!) Wrap and tape, and go.
Don't know about workin' ON the nut, tho...
So, let me re-assure you that re-loading the balls in a plain ballnut
is no big deal. The trick is holding the screw CENTERED in the nut
when you start putting the balls in. Once you have a full 360 degrees
of balls inserted, it gets easier. You will have to shift the screw
back and forth at first to get things "on track". And filling the
ball return tubes can be helped by having a third(or fourth!) hand.
Be sure to use ALL the balls(don't lose any on disassembly, you'll
regret it!!!).
As to the centering problem, just turn a couple of cylinders to fit
between(slip fit) and go for it!
Good luck.

Before I do, the nut needs some machining. ( The nut has a big round
flange - I want a smaller rectangular flange. There's plenty of metal
to
accommodate me )
Obviously, any man in his right mind would remove the nut from the
screw
before doing so. Not necessarily falling into the "right mind"
category, I've actually thought about simply wrapping the screw up to
protect it and having at it. You see, it's occurred to me that
something bad might happen when I wind the nut off the end.
So here's the question .. are there any tricks and/or precautions for
taking a ball nut off a screw and then putting it back on again ?
