Ball Screw Disassembly

Hmm, all this talk of ball screws has me nervous.

I purchased some surplus ball screws at PRIME and will soon be putting
them into service.

Before I do, the nut needs some machining. ( The nut has a big round
flange - I want a smaller rectangular flange. There's plenty of metal to
accommodate me )

Obviously, any man in his right mind would remove the nut from the screw
before doing so. Not necessarily falling into the "right mind"
category, I've actually thought about simply wrapping the screw up to
protect it and having at it. You see, it's occurred to me that
something bad might happen when I wind the nut off the end.

So here's the question .. are there any tricks and/or precautions for
taking a ball nut off a screw and then putting it back on again ?
