Used to be, the answer was YES. Old stepper usage engineering docs
talked a lot about "reflected loads" to the stepper shaft being some
factor of the stepper rotational mass for best results. Still true,
but with the drive technologies available today (reducing the effects
of resonance,both lo-end and mid range), and the more powerful
magnets, the "brute force" approach works more often than not.

I have mentioned before the possible skipping when the mass driven is
too small, as is the case of a Sherline leadscrew "between the
backlash"(where the motor is ONLY turning the mass of the L/S).
