The best solution is replace the screws, if necessary, with socket head
cap screws.
Put a nut with a star washer on the screw before inserting into the
machine. You can
hold the screw with a key or allen driver while you tighten the nut.
This way, you
can be sure the gib adjustment has not been changed while tightening the
lock nut.
(Atlas lathes were built essentially this way 50 years ago, although
they made their
own set screws and locknuts.)
