I've made wormwheels successfully using a tap as a hob. The ones I have made
so far have used a 1/2" whitworth tap and a 1/2" whitworth screw as the
worm. It can be a bit awkward at first to get the size of the wheel right
but it easy enough to start with the blank a bit oversize and just keep
feeding the tap in until the teeth look right, bearing in mind that the
blank needs to be sized so that the final wheel will have the right number
of teeth. If you polish the screw thread a bit, they work together as sweet
as any commercial gear pair. The teeth on the wheel pictured on the web page
you referenced are considerably shallower than the ones I used.
