Hi Smoke,
Better still, make it so that the worm will pivot with respect to the wheel
so that you can adjust the depth of engagement precisely and readjust it as
the worm wears. That way you can always get minimum backlash. You will
usually see this type of system on a dividing head where backlash and
freedom really matter.
