You don't have to tilt the gear. The tool rotation combined with the
carriage feed causes the correct helix to be cut. It is like taking your
lead screw between centers and feeding the gear past it at the correct lead.
Now try to imagine grinding the lead screw down to a single point cutter. If
you still feed the gear past at the correct lead the single tooth cutter
follows the same helix relative to the gear. It took me a little while to
visualize it at first but once you get it you'll the simple elegance of it.
