Hi Alan,
The princple is the same as for any gear hobbing but, to do a normal spur
gear, you would have to set the blank up at an angle to the tap equal to the
pitch angle of the thread - not as easy as simply slipping the blank on a
vertical bolt.
The other problem with this is that, unless you use a specially made tap
(hob) the shape of the teeth will be wrong. It doesn't matter with a worm
and wheel like this because the teeth on the wheel and the worm have exactly
the same shape as they are derived from the same thread.
