Re: Cool Worm Gear

I have made several worm gears this way.
I start with a blank that is slightly O/S and use
a high helix spiral flute tap, this way i don't need
to index the gear. The spilal flute helps "drive" the
gear around. Also, it keeps the tap teeth engaged all the time.

Works great. But watch out for 1/2 hard brass as it work hardens
quickly and will destroy a tap in no time flat.
