!%&!#^ FTP

I'm a DOS guy who tolerates Win9x, not the least of reasons being that it
can multitask DOS programs (and I can have lots of command lines open).
But it looks like for the machine control end of things on my upcoming CNC
Sherline mill, Linux and EMC are the popular way to go (if only from the
standpoint of having a freeware G-code interpreter). I figure I'll do a
little poking around and see what this is about.
We have a multiple T1 at work, so I can easily download large amounts of
stuff in the background. So I go to a Redhat mirror site and am 79 MB into
an FTP download of umpteen little and big files (the whole i386 directory
tree...) when the Internet connection goes down and I get an error message
about remote chdir to a nonexistent directory. FTP program crashes. !%&!#^
Is there a particular reason why there isn't a big gzip file of the whole
distribution? And/or is there a place I can go for such, where I could
resume a download if necessary?
Thanks,
Randy
