If all else fails (like you can't find any locally at the used computer
stores) you can always find older cards on e-bay. I have had very good luck
using S3 Virge cards with Linux.
EMC is not really graphic. There is the backplot module that Ray Henry has
provided, but other than that it looks like a dedicated machine controller
with some buttons and sliders and coordinate displayed. When I first started
looking for a new controller to replace DeskNC I didn't know how would live
without a graphical tool path display. Well, I quickly found out that seeing
it on the controller as it was cutting is really not something that I miss
very much. All I have to do is look at the part to see what is getting cut.
The mother board is one I got new about 1 year ago. It is an AMD K6-500
system. You can now buy them used for close to a handful of dirt. I wouldn't
worry too much about blowing out a parallel port. While it is possible it is
very unlikely.
