If you are looking to use the system as a machine controller running EMC
then a faster IDE controller and fancy video cards will make absolutely no
difference. If you are looking at using the Linux box as a replacement for
your Windows desktop then you will likely want the latest hardware
available. The disadvantage it you will have to use a newer version of Linux
and fight the battle of getting it installed.

Happily running EMC on RedHat 5.2 on a system with plenty of ISA slots.
