Joe,

See my previous post mentioning eGroups Lathe 2000. Look for the pic
called "Harcrete" for an example of how Hardinge does this.

Also many large multi head routers and table saws in the wood
industry use steel weldments filled with concrete. Works well.

I still wouldn't do it with aluminum (reference to an earlier post)

P.S. Seems that a CNC lathe I saw at a M/W trade show also used this
construction (mid-range slant bed, like BP or Haas).
