I would think that either a 20Mhz PIC (with its 200nS instruction cycle) or
a Dallas Semi high speed version of the 8051 would be able to do linear and
circular interpolation and pulse generation in software at a rate of +50 khz
per axis. But Mariss's pulse generator circuit would still be potentially
faster (hint: it is not limited to 4000 steps/sec)...
