The couplings that I am using are the ones that are slitted and look like a
big spring, so there is no way that I could rely on a thrust system in the
motor. That is why I am going to be sure the handwheel is loose enough to not
drag.
I set up the Z axis with a thrust bearing above and below the black adapter
that is at the top of the Z column. I had to relieve the handwheel a few
thousands on the bottom so it would not drag. I used some ground flat
washers from the bearing supplier above and below the bearings, as I did not
want them to run on the aluminum, they are roller bearings. The X and Y axis
will have the same bearing setup, but on both sides of the mounting plate. I
tunneled thru the column adapter block to put the Y axis stepper in the back,
and will mount the X axis stepper on the left end. I mounted the mill on a
cheap Chinese surface plate. Makes for a heavy, stable setup. The mill
conversion was based on what Ron Ginger did to his mill. Thank you Ron.
