I hope you didn't disassemble the motors! If so, you may easily have
lost a LOT of torque. Steppers should NOT be taken apart by novices,
or in less-than "clean room" conditions... This has been discussed
before on the list.

You can accomplish the same goal by placing a thrust bearing between
the stepper body and a SOLID coupling to the screw. Take up
the 'slack' when fastening the coupling.

On the CNC mills (and retrofits), THEY DID! MUCH better than most of
our homebrew attempts,IMO. Of course, when you designed the machine,
and own the factory...
