When using a router, the maximum cutting width should not be greater than
1/2 the diameter or (if full dia. is required) the depth should be no
greater than 1/2 the diameter ...or so it says in all my wood working books.

I believe you're overloading the 1/16 inch bit considerably. I'm surprised
the bit doesn't simply break!
