Peter,
I run a small Hardinge chucker converted to CNC. It has a Dunham brand bar
puller which is nothing more than a cup shaped gripper that has slits in it
to make a series of fingers around the periphery. These have a slight spring
temper. The cnc stops the spindle ( 5Hp VFD driven) and then pushes the
gripper over the bar. The collet closer is released, the carriage is moved
the programmed distance for bar stock advance and the collet is closed. The
carriage then pulls the gripper back off the part to start cutting a new
part. Since the stub can get stuck in this type of gripper, I measure the bar
accurately and program the cnc to loop the correct number of times. When it
stops, the stub is in the spindle. Works good and it's fairly inexpensive.
There are pneumatic gripper systems, bar pushers etc.
