Hi Steve,
It seems like you're finding the same kinds of problems I had - the
conclusion I came to is that, if any peripheral card will work easily
with windows, there's no chance of getting it going with linux! At the
moment I'm struggling with a modem card and I have come to the
conclusion that its just too modern for linux and so I shall have to
look for another very basic one. I suppose the beauty of this is that
you can use cheaper peripherals but what use is that when you're trying
to convert an existing system? I had no problem getting linux to coexist
with windows - it just sorted itself out. I assume you are installing as
a 'workstation' - this automatically partitions and reformats your
drive. I would suggest that you start again, repartition the hard drive
using a dos (windows) boot disk and 'fdisk' and create a smallish DOS
Primary Bootable partition - say 20Mb - only. Then reboot using the
linux boot disk and install linux as a workstation (if you want to put
Windows on the machine and your hard drive is big enough, obviously make
the dos partition large enough for all your windows requirements). When
linux has compiled it will set up Lilo to boot from either dos or linux.
You can actually specify where you want Lilo to live but I assume it
puts something in the bootable dos partition.
