Yes. Machining the ends can be difficult depending on which ballscrew you
end up with. Some brands are really hard and you need to cut the ends with
low speed and enough feed to get under the harden material. On many
occasions I have heated the ends to be machined to a straw color and and
then let them slowly air cool. This seems to also help. But some have been
so hard the only way to machine them was to grind them with my toolpost
grinder.. Generally when you get to the root diameter they are relatively
soft under that. So I generally machine the ends to .417 and stub them to
17mm which is what the original shafts were.
