Well, Bill,
Since you asked, I just finished up adding the extra Z axis ball thrust
bearing on my Sherline 5400 Mill with the shaft threaded to take a preload
nut. This removes the handwheel from the task and allows real lash adjustment.
Also, the saddle nut was worn to unaceptable limits so, this was partially sawn
thru horizontally and the two halves squeezed closed enough to make the lash
close to zero. There is no room for any other adjustment method with the
existing design.
A new spindle speed controller/3 axis motor cable interface box is almost
finished and will be mounted on the back of the column base block above the
*rear* Y axis stepper motor.
The spindle on/off interface circuit will be added in this assy.
