Scott,
There is no clear answer to your question. It might work and then
again it might not. That seems kind of hit or miss, but the only way
to know for sure is to try it.
I'm running a CNC mill on a home made converter (5hp sindle motor)
and I know a guy running a new Mori lathe and Fadal mill, both off a
large homemade converter.
I also know of another guy who had all sorts of problems running a
lathe, until they ended up oversizing the store-bought converter up
to a 30hp type.
A 1988 lathe? Don't mean to scare you, but with a machine that old
the phase converter may be the least of your problems. Is the
machine currently running? Are you getting any kind of warranty?
What control does it have?
Doug
