Hello Tim
On the gorton I once rebuilt I had to play with the counterbalance quite a bit.
At the end I put it in the middle exactly the same way You did. and then
tried to force up and down with a pry bar on some wood.
I felt comfortable when the force to push up was the same as to push down.
Anyway that unit had a powerful hydraulic unit.
