Hi Tom, welcome back, it's been a long time.

I would suggest 5 channels so that if somebody wants to also add a 4th axis - rotary, they would also have that option. There are even a few folks playing with more, but the rotary 4th is now very affordable and there is no cad-cam software available to program more than 4 without a sizable mortgage on your home.
