I'll throw in my recommendation that you get some Gecko 340s and find some
servo motors and skip the steppers, if you haven't already started down that
road. The Geckos really only have two adjustments to make, Gain and
Damping, and you can tinker with them and get them running pretty well. The
limit pot adjustment is no big deal. I think CNC pro is very popular on
this list, and many others will suggest their favorite cad /cam software.
Yesterday, I just finished retrofitting a series I Bridgeport mill with the
Geckos, and I love them for their simplicity. US digital has cheap encoders
too. Just watch out for electrical noise interfering with the encoder
wiring. Tim is also in the process of retrofitting a big Bridgeport mill.
Get a catalog from US Digital on their encoder products. Their encoders
will fit many shaft sizes.

Others may suggest servo motor sources.

> I am new to writing to the list. I have been reading it for a year. And
look forward to reading it everyday. I will start with some back ground on
me. I have worked in factory all my life as a maintenance electrician or
electrician industry on new machines. Can somebody help me to get started.
We got a Grizzly model G8689 you guys call it the mini mill. And a 486
computer to go with it. We wood like to make it into a CNC mill. I have
been looking at Camtronics Inc. For the parts to get started, but I do not
know wear to start. I guess I need a parts list and some kind of blue
prints to get started. I have worked on servo's. But I have not worked on
setter motors. Some a am start out new. I guess what I am saying do they
have kit that will work on the mill. With plans that are easy to to work
with I think I need 3/4 axis kit/plans. Thank you for any assistance that
you can give me. What is the easiest and cheapest way to do this , with
emphasis on easy . Thank you very much for your patience. Gene H.
