Well, it's a bit hard to find 5 phase motors larger than NEMA 23 and
about 1 A ratings, they are mainly light/medium duty high
precision/smoothness..
More importantly, I have it mentally filed away that they're largely
super ceded by 3 phase hybrid motors. Don't remember off hand what site
etc the info came from, but remember it was on good authority and made
sense, and look up hybrids again if and when high smoothness or
precision is needed. There were 5 phase and 3 phase variable reluctance
motors, then someone came up with the hybrid motors. Foggy on the exact
details, but the reason you don't see lots more and larger 5 phase
motors was because the 3 phase hybrids had basically all the same
advantages, with the extra advantage of less driving electronics. 5
phase motors were kind of a specialty item before that, and are now a
niche item that are only used in a few cases. (I think none of which
tended to be helping other parts chew through metal..)
Still could be worth it for certain things, especially if 1000 half
steps per rev is enough to eliminate gearing etc and the load is light
enough.
