Sounds like you are talking about a stereolithography setup.
Stereolith is another one of those marvellous technological innovations to
create prototypes rapidly from a solid model or a fully "watertight" surface
model.
A resin is polymerized in layers using a laser.
The data comes usually from a reformatted CT scan.
