Jon,

Just in case you've not had one apart, the Procunier uses cone clutches.
There is no provision to take up an overtravel situation. An infeed just
slightly under calulated feed will prevent binding, at the expense of
possible slight slipping of the clutch. Same thing for backing out.
Backing out too fast will either break the tap or pull it out of the
collet. (which is a proprietary collet, btw).
Procunier is very unforgiving of hitting bottom in blind holes, and dull
taps, having no overload clutch whatever. The more pressure applied, the
better the clutches work.
