They are pin compatible.
I have an NEC 486 laptop that I replaced the HD on. The drive was
physically the same size, but the connector on the drive was slightly
larger than the recepticle on the laptop. I had to take a dremel an
remove some plastic to get it to fit.
If you are going from larger to smaller then you probably will want
to use something to fill up the missing space - to keep the drive
from moving and damaging the connector. Going from smaller to larger
probably won't work as the space is probably made just to fit the
smaller drives.
