I haven't tried it myself but I know the (volume)jewelry casters use it. I
would GUESS it is because the steam would only work on the wax actually
exposed to the steam, which would tend to melt from the center out, thereby
preventing cracks. Perhaps the steam also softens the ceramic shell
somewhat as well, helping to prevent cracks. The shells would have to be
allowed to dry again prior to final burnout to allow the excess absorbed
moisture to evaporate.
I'm going to give it a try sometime soon. I've got a bunch of patterns made
from low meltiing point candle wax which are awaiting ceramic shells.
