I use an ethernet. I started with thin-wire (coax) but converted to
twisted pair when I hauled a twisted-pair hub out of the dumpster
at work. Linux has an FTP daemon that runs all the time, so it can
accept ftp connections from the Windows machine. You can use Samba,
but I much prefer TCP/IP and ftp. You can even ftp from a web browser,
but I have some shareware ftp clients that work very well.

Remember, Linux is a descendent of Unix, and the Unix world
basically invented networking. All the networking services you
could ever imagine are present in Linux.
