Hi Paul,
No need to put the new kernel on a floppy so long as, when you copy it to
the /boot partition, you call it something different to the original
(doesn't really matter what you call it - vmlinuz1, rtlImage, Bert, Fred,
whatever - then copy the part of /etc/lilo.conf which tells it the boot
image name, where it is etc and paste it into lilo as a new 'paragraph' and
change the kernel name to what you called it and give it a new 'boot name'
like rtl. Then when you reboot the machine, press the tab key when you get
the lilo prompt and you can choose which kernel to use. If the new one
doesn't work, you can just reboot to the original one and fix it. Just make
sure you leave the 'default image' in lilo.conf set to the original kernel
until you are sure the new one is stable.
