If your going to tap manually, best is to use both a center guide and a tap
wrench.

Clamp the part in the drill or mill so it won't move. Tap drill the hole.
Replace the drill with the center guide and then tap the hole.

If you are going to tap the hole using the machine to do the work, be sure
to use a machine tap and not a hand tap. In this case the tap is placed
directly in a collet for tapping. The machine is set to run slow as
possible. The feed is manually run down until the tap grabs. it will pull
itself in. As soon as the proper tap depth is reached the spindle direction
is reversed to pull the tap back out. The spindle brake IS NOT USED.

Tap depth can be "set" by wrapping a piece of tape around the tap at the
point of maximum depth desired.
