Aha! so there is some sense in it then but, is this system of designation
specific to just a small range of manufacturers? A number of the steppers I
have amassed would not correspond to the shape I think you are describing.
For instance, the small steppers out of 5.25" floppy drives are square as
are those out of the plotter I mentioned and some I have out of printers and
photocopiers are short and squat. I assume all this means is that there is
no universal way of determining by visual inspection whether any given
stepper in a piece of old kit will be worth salvaging or not. Thanks
everyone for the info anyway.
