Hi Ian.
A 23 frame is 2.3 inches in diameter, a 34 is 3.4 inches. I don't know who
came up with that designation. It is NEMA and as such they have standardized
mounting bosses and bolt patterns. The shaft sizes are supposed to be
standard too but there is a lot of variation. Hope this helps.
