NEMA standards are applicable for industrial applications where
manufacturers are sourcing components for larger assemblies, such as CNC
machines. Disk drives are in another category. Here economics (volume),
size constraints, and other factors dictate
motors optimized to the application. Still, I would assume there are
standards here as well, just not as widely known as NEMA.
I bought a cartesian coordinate robot (the basis for my gantry mill) and
was quite surprised to discover I could not bolt NEMA steppers in place
of the Tamagawa servos.
There used to be a web page for someone that sold new stepper motors at
a decent price. He mentioned this metric standard and had the
dimensions. It's close, so be aware that not all motors that appear to
be NEMA size, in fact are.
