No, I have an 80,000 RPM air-bearing PC board drill spindle made by
Westwind. In uses a 3-phase induction motor. The rotor of the motor
is about 3/4" diameter, the while spindle is just one diameter all the
way. I can run it up to 24,000 RPM on a 400 Hz-capable VFD. It
takes about 4 A at 80 V and 400 Hz.

I just got a Rockwell/Precise 54,000 RPM spindle that takes 240 V
900 Hz for full speed. This one has ball bearings.
