I'd favor EMC (a research project of the NIST, public domain & open source,
linux based) - very powerful control software. It's not a plug-in solution.
You'd need to do a fair amount of rough edge smoothing to make it
commercially competitive, IMO. One reason why I don't do that, myself :). On
the other hand, it's a good way for a small company (like mine/yours?) to
gain a competitive edge by making use of it. I'd go that way if you're
interested in coding your own control. (ok, I'm EMC biased)

Other controls that have been favorably mentioned are Master5, CNCPro, AHHA.
Try doing a search for on this list for those, and 'control'.
