Alex,
And you might have missed one of Jons' points:
Your concern seems to be your liability in the event the cnc
CONTROLLER code is changed.
Jon pointed out (correctly, IMO) that a crash of the GCODE program by
an OPERATOR error can and will lead to a similar liability problem,
AND is much more likely than someone "hacking" the machine (which
both Ray and Matt explained could be protected at least as well as
existing proprietary systems).
Also, there is nothing preventing you from using the code and
protecting it however you see fit, and charging whatever you feel
your customers will pay for updates/upgrades... The fact that it
BEGINS as US govt. sponsored work makes it DIFFERENT from "open
source" (like linux). You may have to avoid using someones update to
the code, IF they have claimed Linux type "open source" licensing of
THEIR code.
And lastly, what is wrong with the idea of using "hardware" locks to
prevent the type of access which will ALLOW the changes in controller
code you wish to avoid? This type of liability protection has been
used successfully for decades...
Hope this helps.

P.S. In our current legal system, the "lawyer" is going to look for
liability WHEREEVER the "pockets" are deep...
