Darrell,
Retro-fitting these older engravers is a "staple" for several
companies in the engraving industry. Western engravers(Vision) and
others can be found linked to the A&E (Awards and Engraving)trade
magazine site/show listings. I don't have a url;try a search. There
is a good company in L.A., CA, called Three-E-C or some such, who can
help. Also a S/W co. in LA (Louisiana) that starts with X...

P.S. I did two of these by snipping the traces on the driver board,
and "inserting" the S/D signals from the p-port.(The issue back then
was the ridiculous cost of fonts, and their proprietary nature.)
But, if I were doing it today, I'd just throw the control box away
and wire the motors to a new driver system (assuming the old control
was unacceptable to use; which in your case seems to be true, at
least for YOUR goals)
