Here's my guess:
It sounds like a built in solid state "relay" which works like this:
When the main power switch is turned on, this "relay" is de-energized.
pushing the "on" button energizes this relay and a set of "contacts" locks
the "relay" in the "power on" condition. The "power on" with the first push
of the button and the "power off" with the second push of the button may
likely be controlled by a solid state flip-flop "switch". If you can trace
the circuit that does this you can bypasss it. However, since it's probably
all solid state, your probably out of luck.
