Tom,
Which model of the Merlin are you building?
The reason I ask, is I am building a simplified 1/4 scale.
In the research I've done, the bevel gears are 45 deg. driven by an
idler off the crank, which also gives the reduction.

This is how thw sectioned R&R at the museum in Hamilton is done.
Could the difference be Packard-vs-Rolls, or the Mark #?
