Well, thanks for the detailed replies. I now understand a bit more as to what
some are after when they use the term "open" controller. And, I am to understand
that it does almost currently exist in its full glory but, only " adjustable" if
you know how. (EMC)
I would never go as far as to say it HAS to be something made for MS Windows. I
just am interested in something that does turn out to be that one absolutely
killer technique that will work for the "10 different machinists" in your
analogy. All this without the Cludgy interfaces that have been made for DOS
applications. I agree there were some that were nice, Ah-ha for one. Now I mean
nice, in that it had a decent appearance with thin detailed lines and was very
organized. Many others look like those big crayons were used as the concept idea.
My point in the paragraph about getting the right program was WHEN that when that
right program comes along.... you will have 10 very happy machinists ! So I am on
the same page in this regard.
I may have missed the threads over time that heralded EMC as being that future,
definite, final, clearcut answer to a PC based control. And, that it was just a
matter of time before the really smart guys get it to do everything one would
ever want.
I have a handful of spare computers..... I should find time to try it.
Some of my curiosity is because many years ago, there were some in the various
groups who really heralded the need for such "openess" in cad/cam programs.
Now that goes back probably 5 or 6 years. I am wondering where that "one miracle"
program went, as I have not heard about it. I dont think it was every made as
when anyone found out just what would be involved, they just quit or were
overwhelmed.
So, I think I "get" where people are going with the open issue. In that regard I
guess it is back in their laps so to speak. They have to make it to get it, or
wait for someone else to make it and share it. Then they need to understand how
to "change" it.
Almost sounds like that is whole nother hobby ! Best Wishes !
I'm gonna just stick to making parts.
Thanks,
Chris L
