John,

The Flashcut system Chris is speaking of uses a SERIAL connection to
its signal generator box. So 50 feet is not that big a deal.

Many of the PC based controllers we talk about on this list use the
PARALLEL port to drive the motors. This makes the
distance "available" with reliability much less...

Some controls have the ability to use a "pendant". Ah-ha!, Master,
indexerLPT-based, and stepster, for example. With these, you could
have the contreol pendant outside, while the computer was inside.
But I'd keep the distance short.
