Please, I'm just thinking publicly right now... so please feel free to
correct me where appropriate (hopefully without flaming me :) )
Short version:
How would I hold the bearing in place on an extrusion?
How much would you be willing to pay for extruded segments? (per foot
lets say)
Long version:
When I was looking at some more detailed photos of linear
bearing pillow blocks, I noticed a little c clip
http://www.mscdirect.com/ProductImages/3541753-11.jpg
Now this c clip is probably used in a self aligning bearing, or the
pillow block itself is self aligning.
What's the easiest way to hold the bearings inside an extruded aluminium
block? C Clip or set screw. [I'm thinking set screw, but at a cost]
C Clip
~~~~~~
Pros:
- Super easy installation of bearing-> pinch -> insert -> done
- allows for self aligning bearings to work properly.
Cons:
- grooves needs to properly spaced apart to have proper fitting
- grooves need to be cut/ground out.
Set Screw
~~~~~~~~~
Pros:
- Cheap!
Cons:
- must tap the bloody block...
- Self aligning bearings won't work. [but for the cost does it matter?]
[or is there a way to make them selfaligning still, with a setscrew?
It's probably cheaper to have a set screw, then a c-clip to
manufacture... (I could be wrong).
Mind you set screws are cheap, but tapping is a bi---.
Or better yet, just sell them as blocks of 1'.
How much would you be willing to pay for extrusions, which you could
easily make into linear bearings?
I don't know how much a c clip is, but I'm thinking cheap as well.
However to make the little grove, would be more a pain (unless there's
an easy way I don't know about, and that could well be, could someone
inform me?).
Not sure what's worse, the two little grooves, or one tapped hole.
