IMO threaded units work great for most wood applications. They may not be
accurate enough for metal, but take a look at the photo engravings and signs
on the Master5 Yahoo group. 90% were done on an all-thread machine. In fact
some where done with belts, and some even on a table I move over a 48"
distance with a piece of aircraft cable wrapped around a pulley from my
sailboat and the pulley is epoxied to the shaft of the stepper motor.
Perfection, no, but better than non-cnc results and the photo's speak for
themselves. If you really want to learn your way around CNC, there's no
better method than building a cheapie and learning from your mistakes where
the real weak points in design are. I have built two tables and I can tell
you my third (very soon) will be a real piece of work now that I know where
to spend the money and where not to.
