Funny you should mention the Acme 1 - 5 tap. I have for some time been
thinking of using a long Acme-threaded rod as a "rack", then cutting a
"pinion" gear, using an Acme tap as a "hob". Anyways, I just got a
Wholesale Tool catalog the other day, and ZAP! There on page 806, I could
get 12 ft of 1-5 Acme rod for $37.80 (US)/ea. The Tap is only $89.95. So,
3 rods (one cut into two 6 ft pieces), and 8 gears, would make an approx 4
ft x 10 ft drive setup for the CNC plasma cutting table I need! By hobbing
the gear, with a geared-drive, the resulting teeth should approximate the
involute tooth form that is desirable for rolling contact. (The finished
gear would look a'kin to a ring gear in a worm-drive). I'll just have the
gears roll on the "rack". I'll have to figure a way to secure the threaded
rod straight & flat. And careful to match the rods as closely as possible.
Should aught to yield a table capable of +/- >.015"; well enough accuracy
for plasma cutting, eh? If I do go that way, I'll let you know... perhaps
I'll make the Delrin "nuts" for you, if you can't find a different way.

p.s. Best of luck in your project!
