This is the easiest way I know of too.

The neat thing is you can use an oversize bearing that would be sized
for your ballscrews or ACME later on. The idea is to get the rod
close to the center for any diameter you might use, now or later.

I am testing with 1/2-13 but will go to 10TPI ACME in the next
iteration.

I used a pillow block bearing, a pair of thrust bearings and two sets
of nuts to allow me to lock the rod in the bearing. I used a 3/4 in
bearing with a spacer like Smoke described.

On the end that extended out about an inch, I put a piece of steel
with 1/2-13 thread, and a 1 inch OD. then a 3 inch-60 tooth XL gear.
Simple and works great.
