I guess I missed the post of Freds that you responded to. Compaq does
some goofy things in places. I've a neighbor kid who loaded one up with
Mandrake 7.0 and he fought it quite a bit. It should work though as a
first EMC machine. You will get better speed from steppermod with the
166 so you will need a bit of care selecting the stepper amps.

Yes you can boot from floppy. There is a program on the cd in the
dosutils directory called rawrite. Start it in a dos window and it asks
for the name of the image to copy. The images are in the image directory
and the one you want is boot.img. Make sure that you have a good floppy
and when you boot it, have the BDI cd in the cdrom drive.
