Guys when I worked for an X-ray equip maker, we had a problem somewhat
similar: XY motion of the cassette containing the film, which is common in
these machines for exposing several pix on one piece. I was given design
responsibility for a new prototype which I laid out with cable belts. The
way this was done, both X and Y motor were mounted on frame and the belts
looped around idlers so they could have independant motion even though
moving X axis moved the Y idlers. More specifically, the Y axis idlers were
on the X carriage, but the X position didn't affect the Y belt action. I
farther tricked this out by putting idler for one part of one axis drive on
the mnotor shaft of the other, adjacent to the drive pulley for the other
axis. It worked out conmpact, neat, and effective. This given heavier belts
(we used 5/16" wide) would also be ideal for a router. One can get part of
the idea by looking at a T-crane hoist traveler, which can boom in and out
w/o affecting the hoist hgt. If our man would appreciate a sketch, I'll put
something on my site.
